Abstract

Chronic wounds remain a major clinical and economic challenge worldwide. Natural-product–based topical therapies are attractive alternatives due to biocompatibility, multi-target activity and cost-effectiveness. Paraboea leuserensis, an Indonesian endemic medicinal plant, has recently attracted attention for its rich flavonoid- and phenolic-containing extracts and promising preclinical wound-healing activity. This narrative review synthesizes current phytochemical, mechanistic, in vitro and in vivo evidence on P. leuserensis as a wound-healing agent, with emphasis on VEGF-mediated angiogenesis, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and formulation strategies for clinical translation. We discuss comparative benefits relative to other phytotherapeutics, identify major translational obstacles (standardization, toxicology, regulatory pathways), and propose priority research directions including marker-based standardization, advanced topical delivery (hydrogel or nanoformulations), and early phase clinical testing. The review integrates the authors’ experimental data with contemporary literature to outline a practical roadmap for advancing P. leuserensis toward clinical application.
