Abstract

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a condition characterized by a persistent increase in pressure within the arterial system. Professional drivers face a higher risk of developing hypertension due to factors such as genetics, lack of physical activity, obesity, excessive salt intake, aging, and stress. This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The research population consisted of all online motorcycle taxi drivers working in the Medan Area District, with a total of 172 respondents selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data processing involved editing, coding, data entry, cleaning, and tabulation. Results showed that 166 respondents (96.5%) were adults with low education levels, 131 (76.2%) earned less than 4 million rupiah, and 98 (57%) were covered by national health insurance. Additionally, 132 (76.7%) were married, 90 (52.3%) had a history of hypertension, 142 (82.6%) worked more than 8 hours daily, and 117 (68%) had been working for over 5 years. Coffee consumption was reported by 100 respondents (58.1%), smoking by 109 (63.4%), and lack of exercise by 105 (61%). Most respondents, 109 (63.4%), had a normal BMI, while 69 (40.1%) were diagnosed with hypertension. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between coffee consumption (p=0.006) and smoking status (p=0.021) with hypertension. Smoking was identified as the most dominant factor, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.297, indicating that smokers have more than twice the risk of developing hypertension.
