Abstract

Ascaris lumbricoides infection is a major public health problem in Indonesia, especially in children. This infection can interfere with nutrient absorption and contribute to malnutrition. This study aims to determine the relationship between Ascaris lumbricoides infection and the nutritional status of children at the Kasih Filadelfia Orphanage in Pematang Siantar City. The study used an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 35 children aged 5–12 years living in the orphanage and was selected using a total sampling method. Microscopic stool examination was performed to detect Ascaris lumbricoides infection, while nutritional status was assessed based on the body mass index for age converted to a Z-score according to child growth standards. The results of the analysis using the Fisher exact test showed a p = 0 , 044 ( < 0 , 05 ) , indicating a significant relationship between Ascaris lumbricoides infection and children’s nutritional status. Children infected with worms have a higher likelihood of experiencing malnutrition than uninfected children. The results of this study emphasize the importance of deworming programs, improving environmental sanitation, and health education to support improving the nutritional status of children in orphanages.
