- Abstract
The documentary genre is taught in numerous communication faculties in Latin America. Like any audiovisual product, students are intrinsically instructed in the fundamental stages for its realization: pre-production, filming and post-production. However, the distribution process, although also applied, has been little studied. Therefore, this research aims to describe the application and teaching of documentary distribution in the faculties of communication in Ibero-America. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was applied, whose operationalization was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 13 teachers who teach the subject of documentary in 9 countries of the region. As main results, it was found that teachers promote the distribution of documentaries made by their students in different modalities, which have been classified into internal, external cultural, self-managed, streaming platforms and television distribution. The research allows us to conclude that the distribution of these documentaries makes it possible to make visible the topics that interest students and the audiovisual modes in which they represent them. This exposes their work in media circuits that transcend the classroom and allows them to acquire skills more aligned with the demands of the professional audiovisual market.
