Abstract

The study examines the role of YouTube film critics in developing audiovisual competencies among university students. YouTube, one of the most popular platforms globally, stands out for its informal yet emotionally engaging educational content, facilitating learning and interaction between content creators and consumers. Film critics on YouTube not only influence cinema attendance and promote independent films but also serve as sources of inspiration and technical knowledge for aspiring filmmakers. This study focuses on three dimensions of audiovisual competencies: language, values and ideology, and aesthetics. Qualitative research was conducted through interviews with students from two Peruvian universities, highlighting how content from YouTubers such as Zepfilms, Caja de Películas, and Fuera de Foco reinforces their audiovisual knowledge and skills. The results show that these YouTubers function as informal educators, enhancing students’ theoretical and practical understanding in areas such as photographic analysis, editing, and character and narrative development. Moreover, YouTube appears as a key tool for complementing formal learning and fostering creativity and inspiration among students. This research underscores the importance of YouTube film critics in the audiovisual educational process and their potential to influence young people’s career choices.
