- Abstract
The treatment of sexual abuse requires a holistic approach addressing physical, psychological, and social aspects. Psychiatrists assume dual roles as treating clinicians and forensic evaluators. In clinical settings, psychiatrists focus on managing psychiatric conditions and establishing therapeutic relationships with victims. In forensic contexts, they evaluate the victim or offender, considering factors like mental health, personality traits, and the nature of the incident. Psychiatric assessments in legal settings help determine the offender’s criminal responsibility and whether the victim is experiencing severe psychological distress. Victim treatment typically includes managing symptoms like anxiety, depression, and PTSD through interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). For offenders, treatment aims to address psychological conditions and reduce the risk of reoffending. In both roles, psychiatrists aim to provide effective interventions that promote recovery for victims and reduce harm from future incidents, supporting both emotional well-being and long-term safety.
