- Abstract
Depression is a common mental health condition that can happen to anyone. Various factors, including social and cultural context, can influence depression. The cultural pressures within the Batak Toba community can have a significant impact on the mental health of Batak males, who often feel pressured to meet these expectations. Batak males who fail to meet these standards are at risk of experiencing stress, anxiety, feelings of helplessness, and even depression. We present the case of a 40-year-old Batak Toba male who developed depression following financial bankruptcy and the social pressure stemming from his inability to fulfill the core life principles of the Batak Toba tribe: Hamoraon (wealth), Hagabeon (descendants), and Hasangapon (honour).
