Abstract

Adolescent methamphetamine (meth) abuse is a serious health problem with long-term neuropsychiatric consequences. Studies show that up to 60% of heavily dependent methamphetamine users experience psychotic symptoms. Previous systematic reviews have also shown that high frequency of use and severity of dependence significantly increase the risk of psychosis, by 3-11-fold and 2-3-fold, respectively. This Article searches were conducted on PubMed®, ProQuest®, and EBSCO®. The screening process was based on eligibility criteria to obtain relevant articles. A case show a 15-year-old male patient with a history of daily methamphetamine use (up to 2 grams/week) developed persistent psychotic symptoms despite abstinence. Symptoms included auditory hallucinations, suspicious ideation, and suicide attempts. Previous studies have also shown a 9.37-fold increased risk of schizophrenia diagnosis in the methamphetamine-using population and a 1.8-fold increased risk of suicide attempts. So Methamphetamine-induced psychosis can progress to Schizophrenia, especially in users with high exposure and heavy dependence. Long-term intervention approaches and comprehensive rehabilitation are essential in the adolescent age group.
