- Abstract
“The use of ‘Basa Walikan,’ a slang language unique to Malang, has been increasingly limited in daily communication among youth, raising concerns about its potential decline and the erosion of local dialects. This study investigates the reasons behind the reduced usage of ‘Basa Walikan’ and explores strategies for its maintenance. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through observations and interviews with four Malang youth and adults who still actively use ‘Basa Walikan.’ Case study design was applied to examine participants’ responses and experiences, focusing on the varying contexts in which ‘Basa Walikan’ is used. The findings reveal that its usage differs significantly across settings—while seldom used in academic environments, ‘Basa Walikan’ is commonly spoken in informal spaces such as coffee shops, where words like ‘ipok’ (for ‘coffee’) and ‘kane’ (‘delicious’) are frequently spelled out. This study contributes valuable insights into the current state of ‘Basa Walikan’ and offers recommendations for its preservation within the Malang community.”
