- Abstract
Reflecting on previous studies, this research discusses the impact of World Englishes and the sociocultural factors that shape students’ attitudes towards their own accents and native accents. This study examines how English Department students in Indonesia perceive native-speakerism and its impact on their perception of Indonesian English, a term that refers to the variety of English spoken in Indonesia, and British English accents. The study highlights how the idea of native speakers as the ideal language learning model influences students’ perceptions, specifically emphasizing British English accent. The research employed a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews as its data collection technique involving six participants—two graduate and four undergraduate students— to explore their preferences and perceptions regarding Indonesian English and British English. The findings of the study reveal that although Indonesian English accents are more favored in terms of comfort and flexibility, the British English accent is still regarded as higher in prestige than the non-native or Indonesian accent. This study provides new insights into the impact of native speakerism on EFL students’ English language learning.
