- Abstract
This study aims to identify the vitality of Indonesian Bajau, especially spoken in the South Halmahera Region. The study applies a descriptive-quantitative method. The data were collected through a closed questionnaire. The data was then analyzed and categorized according to criteria proposed by Grimes at the Consignment of Endangered Language at Marasa Hotel in Ciawi, 2nd—4th of December 2011. The result shows that the average index of all indicators is 0.53. The number indicates that the target language is eroding, with only half of the children and elders using the language. Furthermore, it reveals that the Bajau people still actively use the language in the household. However, the language is not used in the other areas. The infamous sea nomads live quite far from the city but do not make them feel left behind. They still can access mass media in the national language. Most also speak at least three languages, including their mother tongue, the Bajau language, one other local language, and the national language. Even without proper regulation from the government, they are still proud of their native language. Parents transmit their language to their kids. The result of this study is expected to be used as the basis for further studies related to the conservation and revitalization of the language.
