- Abstract
The Independent Curriculum requires contextual learning that inte- grates culture and realistic learning, but there is still little regional culture incorporated into the main material at the elementary school level. Considering the potential of local culture that needs to be introduced through core subjects such as IPAS, especially the cultural diversity in Banyuwangi Regency, which is characterized by its icon, Batik Gajah Oling. The history of Batik Gajah Oling is very interesting, although it is rarely the subject of research, so this study was conducted to explore the opportunities for integrating science with culture, or what is commonly referred to as the ethnoscience of Batik Gajah Oling, in its historical aspects into IPAS material in elementary schools. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with the Banyuwangi tourism and culture office and Batik Gajah Oling artisans, the data was analyzed using the methodology of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). Covering data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. This study found that the results of the exploration showed a correlation with historical aspects, namely the vine pattern on Gajah Oling Batik and the dilem leaf. The results of the exploration of the sulur motif can be integrated into the plant material found in grade 6, specifically in the topic of the reproduction of living things, particularly ferns, mosses, and fungi. The exploration of dilem leaves can be integrated into the dicotyledonous material in grades 4 and 5. It can be concluded that ethnoscience in the culture of Batik Gajah Oling Banyuwangi can be integrated into the material, specifically in the historical aspect. From this study, further in-depth and follow-up studies related to ethnoscience in Batik Gajah Oling are still needed.
