Abstract

This study explores pre-service science teachers’ learning needs for developing productive thinking—covering critical, creative, and self-regulatory dimensions—within sustainability-based science education. Using a mixed-method exploratory design, data were collected from 150 participants across three Indonesian universities through surveys, interviews, and document analysis. Findings revealed that while students were aware of environmental issues such as microplastics and bioplastics, their engagement remained descriptive and teacher-centered, with limited opportunities for reflection or inquiry. Learners expressed a strong preference for experiential and collaborative activities that link science concepts to real environmental contexts. These results emphasize the urgency of integrating sustainability-oriented inquiry and reflective practice into teacher education. Theoretically, the study extends Kolb’s experiential learning model, while practically, it provides the foundation for developing the PoMBEL-SEG model to enhance adaptive reasoning and transformative science education aligned with SDGs 4 and 12.
