- Abstract
Family health in Indonesia remains a critical concern, particularly in Madura where women serve as primary guardians of household wellbeing. However, dietary practices centered on rice, limited nutrition literacy, and patriarchal norms constrain their capacity to improve family health. This study examines how strengthening women’s social capital can enhance food diversification awareness and promote healthier outcomes. A mixed-methods design was applied: a survey of 220 productive-age housewives measured food consumption patterns and nutrition knowledge, while 30 in-depth interviews and participant observations at PKK, Posyandu, and religious gatherings explored cultural beliefs, indigenous knowledge, and communication practices. Quantitative results show rice dominates daily consumption (85%), while maize, cassava, and wild vegetables are marginal. Qualitative insights reveal that although women possess indigenous knowledge of local foods and herbs, decision-making is constrained by patriarchal family structures. Women’s networks emerged as trusted channels for nutrition information, with PKK and religious leaders playing crucial roles. The study integrates Social Capital Theory, the Yale Persuasive Communication Model, and Middleton’s empowerment approach to propose a participatory communication strategy combining rational-emotional messages with culturally resonant channels. Findings underscore the importance of strengthening women’s social capital to foster dietary diversification and advance family wellbeing in Madura.
