Abstract

This study aims to identify and understand the current state of gender-responsive models in palm oil plantations and to formulate evidence-based recommendations to support the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in East Kalimantan. This will be achieved by drawing on case studies of the Muara Wahau and Kombeng subdistricts in East Kutai. The research methodology comprised field observations, surveys and questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with 30 female workers and farmers, including village officials. These data then further analysed using Root Cause Analysis (RCA) combined with Gender Analysis Pathway (GAP). The findings identifies that gender inequality remains prevalent. There are still disparities between men and women in terms of the decision-making, wage systems, and the availability of women- and child-friendly work facilities. Further, the results demonstrate that women labour and farmers experience limitation to training opportunities and gender-based mechanisms that are impede their progress. This study proposed the model to strengthen their capacity, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial abilities. The implementation of this model is expected to improve the welfare of female workers dan farmers in this industry.
