- Abstract
This study aims to describe the role of dynamic assessment in encouraging realistic problem-solving skills in mathematical word problems. Word problems require students to apply contextual reasoning and real-world considerations, rather than focusing solely on computational skills. However, cognitive processes are often neglected in traditional assessment approaches and only measure the final learning outcomes. In contrast, dynamic assessment focuses on students’ learning potential in problem solving through intervention and guidance during the assessment process. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design, involving four junior high school students in Merauke City, who were selected based on differences in gender, and ethnicity. Two-word problems were used, consisting of one algebraic and one geometry problems each. Data were collected and analyzed qualitatively to determine the type of intervention strategies needed by students to solve mathematical word problems. The results showed that dynamic assessment encouraged students to solve realistic problems in mathematical word problems through various intervention strategies, including image representation, mathematical model construction, and solution interpretation. The study’s findings recommend the use of intervention strategies and feedback in solving realistic mathematical word problems.
