Abstract

Waste management and utilization are very relevant topics today, especially in the context of environmentally friendly and sustainable road construction. The use of natural aggregates as basic materials for road infrastructure continues to dwindle, so alternative materials are needed, one of which is nickel slag. The increase in nickel production is in line with the increasing amount of nickel slag as waste from the nickel processing process. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and control the performance of the load-bearing capacity of asphalt mixtures using nickel slag in the Subbase layer of road construction. Tests were carried out to measure the physical properties of materials aggregate, and nickel slag, as well as the chemical and mineral properties of nickel slag. Empirical testing used the testing method according to the Subbase mixture specifications from Bina Marga 2018. Since nickel slag is classified as Hazardous and Toxic Materials (B3) waste, additional testing is needed to ensure its safe use, one of which is through the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCPL) test, where the results meet the standards and requirements, and nickel slag is also proven to meet the physical criteria for road construction materials.
