- Abstract
The Bunggu Tribe is one of the isolated indigenous communities spread across several sub-districts in Pasangkayu Regency, West Sulawesi Province. Their ancestors are believed to have come from the Kaili Tribe, who settled in the Pinembani mountains, Central Sulawesi, then migrated to the hilly areas in West Sulawesi. Like the Kaili Da’a tribe, the Bunggu Tribe also lives nomadically and builds houses in trees. This study aims to determine the survival and sustainability of the Bunggu Tribe settlement as a society that maintains culture, customs, and customary law after settling in a location with different characteristics from its original residence. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research sample was determined by purposive sampling with the snowball sampling technique. Based on the research objectives, an inductive research strategy was used. The study’s results found that survival in the current settlement location was due to adaptation to the natural environment, opening themselves up by interacting and communicating with ethnic groups outside the Bunggu tribe, and openness to technological and transportation developments. Consistent in carrying out traditional ceremonies/rituals and customary laws in daily life based on local wisdom.
