Abstract

Tourism gentrification has emerged as a significant phenomenon in Bali, particularly in coastal areas that have experienced rapid transformation from traditional agricultural communities to international tourism destinations. This study examines the economic impacts of tourism gentrification in Canggu Village, Badung Regency, Bali, from 2010 to 2024. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative economic data analysis with qualitative interviews of local residents, business owners, and government officials, this research examines the impact of tourism development on local economic structures, income distribution, and community livelihoods. The findings reveal a complex pattern of economic transformation characterized by significant increases in land values (averaging 400-600% over the study period), shifts from agricultural to service-based employment, and growing income inequality between tourism-connected and traditional sectors. While tourism gentrification has generated substantial economic growth and new employment opportunities, it has also led to the displacement of local communities, the loss of agricultural land, and an increase in the cost of living that disproportionately affects lower-income residents. The study contributes to understanding the dynamics of tourism gentrification in developing countries and offers policy recommendations for sustainable tourism development that strike a balance between economic growth and community welfare.
