- Abstract
Mosques in Indonesia are dominated by the use of domes, which are widely believed to be a representation of Islamic architecture. However, the history of dome use is inseparable from the reason of wide-span technology. Unfortunately, the tradition passed down from generation to generation is its form, not the essence of its wide-span technology. In fact, the inappropriate use of domes caused the destruction of many mosques during the earthquakes in Lombok and Palu in 2018. In designing mosques, architects should adhere to the basic principle of the descent of Islam, which is to provide mercy for the universe (rahmatan lil'alamin). This principle is translated in the design and construction of the Annur Aceh Mosque in Lombok and the Nurulhasanah Aceh Mosque in Palu in terms of wide-span technology to prevent interruptions in prayer lines, empower the local economy, and use natural materials to reduce emissions and even act as a carbon sink. This paper aims to reveal the design approach taken and explain the various challenges encountered during the construction of the two mosques..
