- Abstract
Efforts to ban nuclear weapons have gained momentum since the Humanitarian Breakthrough, where non-nuclear states highlighted the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear war. This led to the establishment of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in 2017, which entered into force in 2021. This study analyzes the evolution of international conferences related to the TPNW from 2012 to 2024, focusing on how global dynamics have shifted over time. Using a SWOT analysis, the research identifies several key findings: (1) The strengths of the TPNW lie in its moral and legal framework, which emphasizes disarmament as a humanitarian necessity, garnering support from non-nuclear states and civil society. (2) The weaknesses include opposition from nuclear-armed states and their allies, which hinders universal acceptance and implementation. (3) The opportunities arise from growing global advocacy for nuclear disarmament and increased pressure on nuclear states due to shifting public opinion. (4) The threats include geopolitical tensions and the potential for nuclear states to undermine the treaty through non-cooperation. These findings provide deeper insights into the factors that influence the treaty’s global acceptance and implementation. The study concludes that while the TPNW has made significant progress, ongoing efforts are required to address the resistance from nuclear powers and strengthen international consensus on nuclear disarmament.
