Abstract

This study aims to examine the nature of football-related interactions between Germany, England, and Japan. Business interests, politics, and cultural exchanges can occur exceptionally rapidly through the sport of football. Europe remains the epicenter of global football to this day. Although Latin American giants continue to assert dominance, Europe is the central hub for football development worldwide. European football culture has influenced Japan across multiple dimensions, from internal club management to the expansion of football fandom within society. This qualitative research utilizes cultural imperialism theory by Armand Mattelart and is based on Antonio Gramsci’s main work, Cultural Hegemony. Japan structured its football development by adopting the European system, with a particular emphasis on England and Germany. The strong influence of European football culture is apparent, as it is regarded as the ideal model for progress due to its accomplishments, dominance, and sophisticated methodologies.

This phenomenon represents a form of cultural imperialism that has influenced Japanese football’s evolution, structural development, and transformation into a dominant force within the Asian football landscape. Grounded in historical causality and sociological perspectives, this article critically examines the process of glocalization between European and Japanese football, shedding light on the formation of new dimensions within this dynamic relationship.
