Abstract

This paper focuses on the wealth inequality of families caused by social comparison at the micro level and constructs the index of relative deprivation of wealth. The findings are as follows: 1) high housing wealth has negative effect of wealth inequality, this conclusion has passed the robustness and endogeneity tests; 2) high housing wealth reduces wealth inequality by upgrading consumption; 3) urban areas can attenuate the impact of housing wealth on wealth inequality. This paper puts forward suggestions for China’s housing policy, which can help alleviate wealth inequality and provide a reference for promoting social equity and common prosperity.
