Abstract

Mangrove provides various services and benefits for the ecological and living of coastal local communities in the world. However, mangrove ecosystems face threats from various factors, both natural and anthropogenic. Human activity is the leading cause of mangrove destruction in many countries, including Indonesia. Consequently, prioritizing mangrove restoration programs is essential for promoting environmental sustainability. This study was conducted to analyze coastal communities’ perceptions toward mangrove restoration, describe Community-based Mangrove Forest Management (CBMFM), and assess factors influencing the effectiveness of CBMFM in Pulau Sembilan Village, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. Purposive sampling was used to choose the respondents of this research, where 119 respondents were chosen. Data obtained through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, documentary studies, and participatory resource mapping. Data analysis using descriptive statistics, content analyses, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and Multiple Linear Regression t-test through SPSS 26 software. The findings revealed that the perception of fisheries was higher than that of farmers. The CBMFM model, as a pilot project, consists of four stages: preparation, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The result of the Multiple Linear Regression t-test showed that the main component that influences the effectiveness of CBMFM was local community roles (48.1%). Meanwhile, the government-NGOs’ roles had a contribution of 19.4%, and the physical factors had a contribution of 32.5%.
