Abstract

This study aims to determine the history of the pandemic in the East Sumatra region, then the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on women factory workers and finally to find out the strategies carried out by women factory workers in meeting the economic needs of their families during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this study, the authors used a qualitative descriptive research method with a phenomenological approach, in which data collection techniques were carried out by means of observation, interviews, and documentation. Furthermore, data validation was carried out by means of triangulation. The results of this study are: It was discovered how a series of pandemic events that existed in North Sumatra long before the Covid-19 pandemic, namely Korela, Influenza (Spanish Flu), SARS, to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). As well as the large number of women workers who work in factories in the Sunggal sub-district who have experienced layoffs / being laid off, for this reason, the strategy taken by these women is to work with their husbands, find new jobs to cover the economic needs of their families, including selling, raising livestock, farming, to look for used goods and women also admit that during the Covid-19 pandemic they have to save all forms of expenditure in the family.
