Abstract

Traditional teaching methods in Social Sciences (IPS), particularly history, often struggle with monotonous delivery and abstract material, leading to reduced student interest, passive participation, and limited comprehension of historical events and their significance. This research paper addresses these challenges by exploring the development and effectiveness of interactive historical maps as an innovative learning medium to enhance students’ understanding and engagement in world history. Drawing upon a Research and Development (R&D) methodology, often employing the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate), various studies have demonstrated the potential of interactive maps, ranging from three-dimensional physical models with audio-visual elements (e.g., Arah media) to digital interactive banners (e.g., Peta Jeko) and sophisticated digital maps utilizing platforms like Thinglink or Macromedia Flash. Validation results consistently indicate high feasibility from expert evaluations and significant improvements in student pre-test and post-test scores, engagement, and motivation across different educational levels. The findings underscore that interactive historical maps are not only valid and effective in making abstract historical concepts more concrete and engaging but also foster active learning, critical thinking, and independent study. While emphasizing the technological advancements, it is crucial to recognize the historical context of participatory mapping, where true empowerment transcends mere tools and requires integration with grassroots movements and a critical approach to power redistribution, aligning technology with pedagogical and social objectives to promote deeper, more meaningful learning experiences in world history.
