Abstract

Social awareness and good citizenship attitudes are essential assets for individuals in building social interactions and actively participating in community life. One way to increase this awareness is through education, particularly social science education. This study explores adequate social studies teaching strategies to improve these aspects of social and citizenship awareness in higher education. Using a qualitative approach, this study used in-depth interviews and case study analysis to assess the effectiveness of project-based learning methods, case-based discussions, and an integration of technology, pedagogy, and content mastery. The results show that project-based learning methods, discussions, and the use of technology in pedagogy are very effective in improving students’ understanding of social issues and their involvement in citizenship activities. As a result, these students are able to position themselves as agents of change in society, understand their rights and obligations as citizens, and frequently engage in various activities to improve community welfare. Thus, students have the attitude and responsibility to maintain a sense of national unity amidst the challenges of digitalization and globalization. This study provides a new contribution by highlighting the implementation of active learning in the context of social science education in higher education and its impact on students’ social and citizenship awareness. These findings are expected to help develop a more relevant and practical social science education curriculum at the university level.
