- Abstract
Maintaining the performance of civil infrastructure is vital to support growing societal and economic demands. With aging and continuous exposure to harsh environmental conditions, many structures experience gradual deterioration, which, if left unchecked, can compromise their strength, durability, and functionality. Reinforced concrete (RC) structures, despite their widespread use and inherent durability, are particularly susceptible to various forms of damage under the impact of extreme events such as earthquakes. Early detection is vital to identify distress, enable timely interventions, and support proactive maintenance for long-term asset management. This study highlights the importance of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for assessing the condition of RC structures without causing further damage. A case study of a very old RC building is presented, in which NDT techniques are exclusively used to evaluate its structural health, providing insights for planning maintenance, repair, and retrofitting measures to enhance safety and service life.
