Abstract

Sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation are vital for addressing environmental challenges and promoting inclusive economic growth. This study examines Purabi Dairy, formerly called the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), as a model of sustainable entrepreneurship in Northeast India. As the region’s largest dairy cooperative, Purabi applies circular economy principles through solar-powered milk chilling systems, flexi-biogas digesters, and organic manure production. These practices reduce fossil fuel use, lower methane emissions, and convert cattle waste into clean energy and eco-friendly fertilizers, thereby aligning livelihood security with ecological stewardship. Socially, Purabi organizes thousands of smallholder farmers, including women, into cooperative networks that ensure fair pricing, capacity building, and active participation. Its initiatives advance multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty reduction (SDG 1), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work (SDG 8), responsible consumption (SDG 12), and climate action (SDG 13). Although challenges remain in water recycling, odour management, and carbon auditing, Purabi demonstrates that cooperative enterprises can achieve climate-resilient rural development. This case illustrates how local entrepreneurship can transform environmental constraints into opportunities for green growth, providing valuable insights for similar initiatives in India and the Global South.
