- Abstract
The growing visibility of digital scholarship has stimulated increased interest in altmetrics as complementary indicators of research reach outside traditional citations. In this work, the altmetric reach of 259 articles published in the Semantic Web – Interoperability, Usability, Applicability from 2010 to 2025 is assessed, amounting to 489 online mentions—72% of which came from X (formerly Twitter). Employing data from Dimensions and Altmetric Explorer, in combination with bibliometric mapping using VOSviewer, the research examines attention scores, citation counts, Mendeley readership, as well as patterns in geographic, institutional, and author-level engagement. Results reveal weak correlation (r ≈ 0.25) between Altmetric Attention Score and citation count, but strong positive correlation (r ≈ 0.89) between Mendeley readership and citations. Europe also became the dominant region for altmetric activity, and institutions such as Leipzig University and the University of California exhibited high visibility and collaboration. As one of the initial thorough altmetric studies on SWJ, this study emphasizes the complementary functions of altmetrics and conventional citations in measuring scholarly and societal impact, providing practical information for researchers, journal editors, and policymakers within the digital science community.
