Abstract

Objective: This study explored the relationship between knee pain and physical function among individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) using Digital Patient-Reported Outcome Measurements (PROMs) highlighting their potential contribution to sustainable rehabilitation management.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 40 adults aged 40 years and above with KOA. Participants completed a digital survey comprising demographic information, the Brief Pain Inventory–Short Form (BPI-SF), and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-12 (KOOS-12). Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between knee pain and physical function.

Results: Participants reported predominantly mild-to-moderate pain during daily activities with generally mild functional limitations. A significant weak positive correlation was identified between average knee pain and standing difficulty (r = 0.393, p = 0.012), whereas no significant associations were observed for rising from sitting, getting in and out of a car, or twisting and pivoting activities. The findings suggested that digital PROMs effectively capture patient-centered functional outcomes while enabling efficient, technology-supported clinical assess-ment.

Practical/Theoretical Contribution: Digital administration of the BPI-SF and KOOS-12 demonstrates the feasibility of integrating data-driven outcome measurement into routine physiotherapy management. By reducing paper consumption, minimizing administrative workload, enabling secure longitudinal data management, and supporting real-time clinical decision-making. Thus, facilitate technology-enabled sustainable healthcare systems.
