- Abstract
One of the factors contributing to communication problems between parents and adolescents is the duration of internet use. Excessive internet use may negatively affect interpersonal relationships. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the duration of internet use and parent–adolescent communication among high school students. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The respondents consisted of 308 students from SMAN 5 Malang. The research instruments used were the Modified Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Parent–Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS). Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents had an extreme duration of internet use (8–10 hours per day), both on weekdays (291 students; 94.5%) and weekends (290 students; 94.2%). Most respondents reported a moderate level of communication with their parents (190 students; 67.7%). The statistical analysis indicated no significant relationship between the duration of internet use and parent–adolescent communication, with p-values of 0.867 (weekdays) and 0.619 (weekends) (p > 0.05). In conclusion, there is no significant relationship between the duration of internet use and parent–adolescent communication among high school students. Therefore, nurses are encouraged to provide education and health counseling for both parents and adolescents regarding appropriate internet use and effective communication strategies.
