Abstract

Tourism, a major economic sector globally, significantly contributes to GDP and employment. The post-pandemic recovery has bolstered tourism in Asia, driving regional growth. However, the sector’s expansion often incurs environmental and social costs, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices. This study explores the correlation between Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) and Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDGI) rankings in Asian & European countries to define quality tourism. Using the Spearman rank correlation method, data from the World Economic Forum and Sustainable Development Report 2024 were analyzed. Results show Countries with higher TTDI rankings are more likely to achieve higher SDGI rankings. These variations highlight the imperative for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize sustainable tourism initiatives that balance economic growth with environmental conservation, essential elements of quality tourism. The findings suggest policymakers and stakeholders in both Asia and Europe continue to prioritize and enhance sustainable tourism development initiatives explicitly linked to quality tourism.
