Abstract

Arabic phonology (Ashwat) is an essential course for students in the Arabic literature department, because it is a compulsory subject. Undergraduate students majoring in Arabic literature can gain a fundamental understanding of the sounds production of the language from this course. Students majoring in Arabic literature are required to complete the Arabic phonology course as a compulsory course to graduate. However, in its practice, Arabic phonology presents several challenges for students, such as pronunciation errors and the influence of regional dialects (mother tongues). This preliminary study explores the difficulties students face in mastering Arabic phonology, with the aim of finding the causes of university students’ difficulties in Arabic phonology subject and providing solutions to these problems. This study employed descriptive analysis with a sample of 25 undergraduate students. The results revealed problems such as difficulty in distinguishing several pairs of letters that have similar sounds, using the IPA symbol, and students’ difficulties in learning Arabic phonology independently. Furthermore, the study revealed gaps in the current teaching and learning process including the limited time allocated for individualized learning and oral practice and inadequate use of technological tools for pronunciation practice. This suggests a need for innovative teaching and learning strategies to enhance phonology learning, such as integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and interactive learning.
