Abstract

This research aims to produce teaching materials in the form of a book titled “North Sumatran Cultural Aesthetics,” which will be tested for its feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing students’ artistic insights through project-based learning. The research method is Research and Development (R&D), with the development design adopting the Thiagarajan model, abbreviated as 4-D (Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination). The subjects were fourth-semester Fine Arts Education students. The research method was quantitative, combined with questionnaire results. Determination of the level of suitability of the textbook product was based on validation tests by material, language, and presentation experts. The research results showed that the validation of the material experts was 91.66%, the language experts 92.18%, and the display design experts 91.66%, each categorized as very adequate. Meanwhile, the effectiveness and practicality of the media in enhancing students’ artistic insight in designing project-based assignments were demonstrated through the results of the student questionnaire responses of 88.25% and the lecturers’ 81.25%. The conclusion is that the research product is practical and effective. The research findings, including the documentation of aesthetic values derived from North Sumatran traditional art in traditional architecture, decorative arts, literature, ikat weaving, and dance, can enhance students’ artistic insight in completing project-based assignments. The research product will be implemented as teaching material for the Aesthetics course for Fine Arts students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Medan.
