Abstract

The expansion of virtual reality, augmented reality, extended reality and metaverse-related environments has intensified debate about their capacity to transform contemporary educational processes. However, immersive technologies do not produce educational excellence by themselves. Their value depends on the institutional capacity to integrate them within coherent strategies of leadership, pedagogical design, quality assurance, evaluation, sustainability and ethical governance. This chapter adopts a conceptual approach anchored in the European MUST project (Metaverse for Upskilling and Social Transformation) as an illustrative case to examine how immersive technologies can contribute to educational excellence when managed from a strategic and humanist perspective. On this basis, the chapter proposes an Ecosystemic Leadership Model for Immersive Educational Excellence, articulating distributed digital leadership, immersive pedagogical design, multidimensional engagement, evidence-based quality assurance, institutional scalability, ethical governance and the creation of educational and social value. The chapter concludes that immersive ecosystems only produce sustainable educational transformation when embedded within robust systems of leadership, quality, institutional learning and continuous improvement.
