Abstract

Background: In forensic identification, age determination is a critical aspect to establish. Geometric morphometric (GM) is one of the approaches that can be utilized for age estimation. This study aims to analyze the differences in the shape and size of the L1 vertebra among different age groups using GM techniques on 3D CT scan images. Method: This study utilized 3D CT scans of the abdominal region from 219 subjects divided into three age groups: 20–40 years, 41–60 years, and >60 years. A total of 32 landmarks were applied using the Stratovan Checkpoint software. Geometric morphometric analysis was performed using MorphoJ and SPSS software. Results: There were significant differences in the size (centroid size) of the L1 vertebra among age groups, with a p-value of 0.002 (<0.05). The first principal component (PC1) contributed 16.849% to the variation in the shape of the L1 vertebra and showed significant differences among age groups (p = 0.005). Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) indicated a correct classification accuracy of 37.9% based on age groups. Conclusions: This study identified significant differences in the shape and size of the L1 vertebra among age groups. However, based on the MDA results, the L1 vertebra does not appear to be a reliable indicator for age identification.
