Abstract

Blood loss occurs when women menstruate and its suggests a rapid depletion of iron stores. Erythrocytes require iron for maturation. When iron levels are low, erythrocyte reserves decrease. The longer the menstrual duration, the more blood comes out, which affects the quantity of red blood cells. This study aimed to determine a correlation between the menstrual duration and erythrocyte number in adolescent girls. This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The sample taken was 33 female students of medical laboratory technology from the Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. The study requires data on the menstrual duration of respondents and the erythrocytes number on the last day of menstruation. The result of study showed the average menstrual duration is 7 days, and the average erythro-cytes number is 4.53 cells/mcL. Pearson corellation test showed sig 0.015 (p<0.05). There is a strong positive correlation between the duration of menstruation and the number of erythrocytes. The longer the menstrual duration, the higher the number of erythrocytes in adolescent girls.
