Abstract

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial infection in ICU patients which can result in a mortality rate exceeding 50%. A strategy to minimize the number of VAP incidents is by implementing a bundle (VAPb). Oral hygiene is one of the VAP bundle intervention that has been considered the most important intervention. Nurses are responsible for the patient’s oral hygiene needs to reduce VAP. Low knowledge, poor attitudes and behavior of nurses increase the incidence of VAP. Knowledge, attitudes and behavior are very important components of nurse awareness. Objective: This study aims to determine the description of nurses’ awareness of oral hygiene measures as a prevention of VAP. Method: This research is quantitative descriptive with a survey research approach, this research underwent for 4 months and was carried out in all hospitals in every province in Indonesia. Results: The results of research on 720 ICU nurses in Indonesia showed that the level of knowledge regarding the implementation of oral hygiene as a prevention of VAP was mostly (88.8%) included in the good category, attitudes regarding the implementation of oral hygiene as a prevention of VAP were mostly (99.3%) included in the good category, behavior in preventing VAP was mostly (99.2%) included in the good category. Conclusion: ICU nurses in Indonesia have good awareness as indicated by the results of the awareness component.
