Abstract

As a chronic metabolic condition, type 2 diabetes requires patients to adhere to long-term self-management for treatment compliance. Concurrently, mental health challenges, such as psychological distress stemming from the prolonged treatment process, have emerged as critical components of diabetes care. In recent years, in a different way from traditional psychological intervention methods, interventions based on positive psychology, which focus on positive human development and improving overall well-being, have expanded the horizons of psychological intervention programs for type 2 diabetes. This study investigated the intervention effects of a positive psychology-motivational interviewing (PP-MI) program and positive psychological interventions based on the PERMA model (PERMA-based PPIs) for patients with type 2 diabetes. Through a systematic literature review, it synthesized evidence on how these interventions influence diabetic patients’ emotional states, self-management behaviors, and physiological outcomes. The study showed that the intervention based on the PERMA model significantly alleviated anxiety and depression, increased self-efficacy, and improved diabetes self-management behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes. The intervention combined with motivational interviewing, additionally, effectively increased patients’ exercise efficacy and positive mood. Although both approaches demonstrated short-term efficacy, their long-term impacts remain to be validated through longitudinal studies.
