- Abstract
During the coronavirus period in 2019, the increase in using electronic devices for studying and working motivated the increase in screen time usage for all ages, including Chinese adolescents. In this study, 76 Chinese middle school students between the ages of 11 and 16 participated. This study did not find a statistically significant association between self-reported evaluation on how mobile devices impacted their lives and attention span. However, significant associations were found between the impacts of mobile devices and attention focusing and shifting. In addition, the study found no significant association between the exact screen time recorded on mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets/iPads and the attention span among 46 students who own personal devices. This study has the potential to provide information for follow-up interventions aimed at improving the attention span of Chinese middle school students. Future studies can focus on investigating the most common categories of applications used by adolescents, such as social and entertainment and other health issues.
