- Abstract
In recent years, more and more works by female crossplayers have appeared on short video platforms in China. This suggests that the dominant phenomenon of the past, in which men’s roles were played by men, is shifting. There have been some advances in research on crossplay in academia other than China, where there are fewer relevant contributions. Therefore, the research theme of this study is to explore how the performance of female crossplayers on the Internet influences the identity of their audience in the Chinese social context. This will fill the academic gap of related research in China. The research methodology of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the female crossplayer community in China and the impact they bring through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The study found that female crossplayers’ perceptions of their self-identity are not affected in the Chinese social context, whether as an activity subject of crossplay or as an audience group. It suggests that the performance of female crossplayers in China on the Internet does not affect the participants’ identity.
