Abstract

Amid global warming and the deepening transition to new energy, the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry has emerged as a strategic sector contested by nations worldwide. As the world’s largest producer and consumer market for NEVs, China’s export performance exerts a significant influence on the configuration of global industrial chains. However, since 2018, escalating China-US trade frictions have posed severe challenges to the globalization of China’s NEV industry, intensifying pressures related to high tariff barriers, restricted technical standards, and heightened supply chain security risks. Utilizing cross-country panel data from 2017 to 2024, this paper constructs a two-way fixed effects model to empirically examine the inhibitory effect of trade frictions on China’s NEV exports. The results indicate that the impact of trade frictions—proxied by a “policy” dummy variable as the core explanatory variable—exerts a significant negative effect on China’s NEV export value at the 10% significance level; this conclusion remains robust after rigorous robustness checks. Further mechanism analysis reveals that trade frictions primarily constrain exports by increasing tariffs and operational costs, threatening supply chain security, and erecting technical and market access barriers.
