Abstract

This study seeks to examine the relationship between CEO narcissism and corporate CSR performance. Furthermore, this study examines the mediating effect of top management team (TMT) composition on the CEO narcissism–CSR Risk relationship The authors introduce a novel and unobtrusive measure of CEO narcissism derived from annual reports. The study also investigates the mediating role of Top Management Team (TMT) composition in the relationship between CEO narcissism and CSR risk. This investigation is conducted using a sample of IDX ESG Leaders firms over the period 2021–2024. To test the mediating effect, the authors use the Structural Equation Model. The estimation of the proposed structural equation model was achieved by utilising the Smart PLS 3 software. The results of the study support the theoretical predictions that CEO narcissism affects CSR performance, both directly and indirectly, through the mediation of top management team (TMT) composition. This study contributes to the Upper Echelons Theory (UET) literature by highlighting how CSR performance is influenced by narcissistic CEOs through TMT composition in the Indonesian context, which according to Hofstede’s national culture is a Collectivist society.
