Abstract

With the widespread application of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) among college students, the relationships between loneliness and GAI usage habits of college students have attracted attention. However, there is currently a lack of in-depth empirical research on the relationship between college students’ loneliness and the use of GAI. How to promote college students’ mental health with the help of GAI has become an urgent problem to be solved. This research provides a scientific basis for optimizing GAI application and conducting mental health intervention. This research randomly selected 1,314 college students for a questionnaire survey to obtain their GAI usage habits and used the third edition of the UCLA Loneliness Scale to measure the level of loneliness. The research comprehensively used a variety of statistical analysis methods to deeply explore the association and mechanism of action between college students’ loneliness and GAI usage habits, and at the same time examined the moderating effects of variables such as grade and gender. The research found that there is a nonlinear relationship between GAI usage and loneliness, that is, short-term high-frequency interaction alleviates loneliness, but long-term dependence or insufficient emotional response will aggravate loneliness; the stronger the perception of GAI emotional support, the lower the loneliness; grade and gender differences have a moderating effect.
