Abstract

We are living in an era of technology that has made our lives dependent upon Artificial Intelligence (AI) or machine learning. The Use of AI in our daily activities has made our lives easier. At the same time, we must not forget that ensuring sustainable development is also the need of the hour and AI can assist achieving these Goals). A forest not only acts as a home for wildlife but on a larger scale, it aids and assists existing life on Earth. Proper management of the forest and its resources ensures a clean and healthy environment acting as a shield against the global threat of climate change, global warming etc. AI can effectively be used in forest management in the form of detecting and preventing illegal logging of trees, unauthorized construction in the forest, forest encroachment, illegal extraction of forest resources, and poaching of wildlife via drone etc. This approach enables accurate identification and demarcation of forest boundaries. Further judicial pronouncements in recent times also insist upon using AI for effective forest management. However, using AI for forest management is not free from challenges. AI tools and their installation are expensive. Skilled personnel are scarce for using and providing training for using such tools. The present paper focuses on the use of AI towards ensuring effective forest management and the challenges being faced in using AI. The paper would also contain suggestions for dealing with such challenges.
