- Abstract
The aim of this research is to explore the perspectives and contributions of SME owners towards sustainable practices and reducing environmental impacts towards the goal of net zero carbon emissions. This research uses a mirroring approach with 30 semi-structured interviews with culinary SME owners in Malang City, Indonesia. From the research results, it was found that there is a lack of willingness among SMEs to engage in sustainability practices. SMEs also show a lack of trust in government policies. SMEs do not feel the benefits and impacts of waste and environmental management. In addition, pressure and encouragement from government and third parties are the main factors motivating SMEs to engage in sustainable practices. The limitation of this research is that the sample is limited to 30 culinary SME owners, in further research it can be explored in other SME sectors. This research has practical implications as an input that government policies and the interests of SMEs need to be aligned in order to achieve the net zero carbon emissions target. This study also reinforces the social constructionist approach to improve our understanding of the perspectives and contributions of SMEs in managing net zero carbon emissions.
