Abstract

The growing global population is intensifying the food security crisis, which is fundamental to a nation’s prosperity and economic progress. The Green Revolution of 1960s significantly boosted agricultural productivity by introducing high yielding varieties and agro-chemicals to combat hunger. However, these practices have led to severe environmental deterioration, including soil loss, water pollution and damage of biodiversity. To address these issues, sustainable agricultural practices are the necessity of the time, with organic agriculture emerging as the most viable solution. Ingrained in the principles of ‘health’, ‘ecology’, ‘fairness’ and ‘care’, organic farming promotes a balanced ecosystem while enhancing food production. Further, organically grown foods are enriched in nutrients and free from chemical deposits. Nonetheless, it faces several challenges, including high labor and feed costs, difficulties in maintaining soil fertility, pest and insect control, and limited access to certification and markets. Integrating organic farming with smart technologies is vital to mitigate these limitations and issues. AI-driven solutions enable farmers to boost production with efficient resource use, improved food quality, and expedite market delivery. It further assists farmers in determining most advantageous time for seed planting, distance between seeds along with the optimal planting depth. An AI-generated health monitoring system supplies growers with data on crop vigor and the necessary nutrients to improve quantity and quality of yield. This study offers a detailed examination of the fundamental concepts and essential elements of organic farming, recognizes leading nations, and investigates the application of smart technologies on improving the productivity and efficiency of organic farming.
