Abstract

This study investigates the pitting corrosion behaviors of hot and cold rolled, laser beam welded (LBW) niobium-stabilized 5A duplex stainless steel (DSS). The welded joints were produced using the laser parameters of 3.5 kW power and 4.0 m/min speed to achieve full penetration and minimal heat-affected zones (HAZ). Rolled specimen were characterized using optical microscopy, microhardness and Charpy impact strength. Hot-rolled specimens exhibited partially recrystallized microstructures with moderate hardness (180–200 HV) and superior impact toughness (70–90 J), while cold-rolled specimens showed work-hardened structures with higher hardness (220–250 HV) but lower toughness (40–60 J). Higher critical pitting temperature (CPT) values in hot-rolled joints (up to 52℃) compared to that of cold-rolled (35℃), attributed to the differences in phase balance and dislocation density. The findings highlight the influence of prior thermomechanical processing on weld performance, which is critical for structural integrity in applications involving duplex stainless steels.
