Abstract

The Western Odisha districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nuapada have lagged in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are classified as Aspirational Districts by the Government of India. These three districts face significant socioeconomic development challenges and governance constraints. The State has limited capacity to address these issues. In this context, corporations can make a meaningful difference through tailored CSR strategies, given their competency in managing complex business operations. Such supplemental efforts by corporations can benefit India’s journey towards sustainable development goal (SDG) targets. This paper highlights priority intervention areas through a granular analysis of district-level SDG indicators. It proposes impactful strategic CSR projects based on best practices from other Aspirational Districts aimed at enhancing healthcare access, promoting quality education, developing skills for sustainable livelihoods, improving financial inclusion, and strengthening essential infrastructure. The proposed programs include scaling up community-based nutrition solutions, establishing locally relevant skill development centers, and deploying technology for greater outreach and inclusivity. The paper advocates for multi-stakeholder collaboration to create replicable CSR project models for sustainable and inclusive growth. It presents a CSR-driven roadmap for sustainable development in the Western Odisha districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nuapada.
